Weekly Update
September 23, 2024
Back To School Night: Thank you to everyone who was able to attend last Monday night. I understand that this is a busy time of year. If you were unable to be there, all of the information is posted to the blog for your reference. During the evening I had a sign-up available for conferences. If you do not have a day and time yet, please click on this link to select a time that works best for you. Remember your student will be involved in a conference, so please plan a time when they are also able to attend.
EL Language Arts Curriculum: The reading and writing portion of our new language arts curriculum is starting out well. Our focus is using texts to explore what we know about school and why it is important. We have created many reasons using one nonfiction text titled, “What Does School Mean to You?” and two fiction texts titled, “The Dot” and “The Invisible Boy” We will soon start the Skills Block portion of this curriculum where students will dive into material to “crack the code” of the written language. While we are doing a lot of learning and do not have all the answers to the workings of this program, we are happy to answer or find answers to any questions you have.
Math Learning: As you have seen from the back of the take home folder, our September emphasis is on addition fact strategies in order to help students become very fluent with their addition facts. This means counting by tens starting at different numbers, knowing the complements of ten, double facts, doubles plus one, and counting up just to name a few. We are using this in our math work to prove why problems like 16+5 are 21. Instead of just knowing the answer, we want students to see the different ways numbers can work together. This will become incredibly helpful as we dive into double and triple addition throughout the year. Thank you to everyone who worked on these skills. Over half the class moved up to the next math fact study level on our bi-weekly fact fluency check.
Laps for Lincoln: Mark your calendars for Friday,October 11th, 5-7pm for our Laps for Lincoln celebration!
