Weekly Update
November 11, 2024
Dear Families:
As shared at Back to School Night, we are piloting new ELA instructional materials in grades K-5. This resource offers a rigorous, knowledge building approach for our learners, engaging students in reading, writing, listening and speaking. While our commitment to addressing essential ELA standards has not changed, the order and manner in which standards are assessed in this pilot may be different than in past years. As such, you may not see a reported measure for every ELA standard on your child’s report card. Please also refer to the comments provided by me as well as ongoing communication and conferencing, regarding your child’s progress in ELA. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Word Work: This week our class will be learning about the three sounds that -ed makes in words: /t/, /ed or id/, /d/ such as finished, acted, and yelled. Students should read their word lists, discuss the meaning of the words, and practice spelling words with similar syllable patterns. Spelling City is ready for students to access the Unit 20 practice list for the week.
Science: In our new unit, Work of Water students will explore how water shapes the Earth's surface. Students construct and use models of mountains to demonstrate that water flows downhill, and in the process, transforms huge rocks into the tiny grains of sand we find at the beach. Students will also construct and use model hills to determine the causes of erosion, and to design solutions to problems caused by erosion. Please ask your child what he or she has learned this week.
Thanksgiving Luncheon: Our Lincoln School Thanksgiving
Luncheon will be next Thursday, Nov. 21st. Due to space, only volunteer servers are able to join us. Thank you for your understanding.
Stuff A Truck: November 11 - 22, 2024
Our Lincoln School Student Council is excited to be leading the way in giving back to the larger Berrien County community by collecting non-perishable (canned goods, boxed dinner/pasta) food items. If you are able, simply pick up an item (or more) at the grocery store, and send it to school with your student to be donated. We collect now because there is a greater need for food around the holidays. Thanks for spreading kindness and positivity!
